Germany: Merkel's Party No Longer Calls U.S. A "Friend"

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's  political party no longer refers to the U.S. as a "friend" in its platform.  The joint program adopted four years ago by the conservative Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union parties called the U.S. Germany's "most important friend" beyond Europe.

The new program drops that language, instead calling the U.S. the "most important partner."  Relations between Germany and the U.S. have been strained since the election of President Trump, who once referred to Merkel's migration policy as "insane."  A survey by the Pew Research Center found that only 35% of Germans now have a favorable view of the U.S., down from 57% at the end of President Obama's term.
