Behind the Barrel: How NRA Members See US Politics Differently

INJOIn an advertisement called “The Violence of Lies” released last month, the National Rifle Association sent a controversial message starkly warning Americans that members of the left and the media have been inciting violence and protests throughout the United States.

“All to make them march, make them protest, make them scream racism and sexism and xenophobia and homophobia,” reads NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch in the ad. “The only way we stop this, the only way we save our country and our freedom, is to fight this violence of lies with the clenched fist of truth.”

The video provides some insight into the perspective of the five million members who pay yearly dues to the organization that spent over $30 million on races in the 2016 election.

NRA members, who make up nearly 20 percent of all gun owners, tend to hold significantly different political attitudes than their non-member counterparts, according to a new poll from Pew Research Center.

While over three-quarters of NRA members are Republican or lean Republican, GOP gun owners who are not members of the NRA are 23 percent more likely to support background checks at gun shows and private sales.
