Saudi Police Arrest Woman in Miniskirt Video

INJOThanks to the ladies who came before us, American women have been granted more freedom than ever to live life on their own terms.

We can get in the car and go wherever we want, whenever we want. We're no longer dictated by dowries and improving social status, but instead free to marry whomever we choose. Or, for that matter, not get married and still live a fulfilling life — something generations before us couldn't imagine.

Want to become the CEO of your own company? The only person stopping you, is you. Want to vote for the people who represent you? All you have to do is register. Thinking about marrying another woman? Now, no one can stand in your way.

While we've grown accustomed to these experiences, we so often forget that they are privileges, not rights and more importantly, are privileges our sisters worldwide don't have. The most recent example being a young woman in Saudi Arabia.

On Sunday, Fatima Al-Issa posted a video to Twitter that showed the model known as Khulood walking around in public in Saudi Arabia wearing a skirt and black t-shirt:

As Americans, we may watch the footage, applaud her gram-worthy filming and wonder where she got her outfit. It may even give us wanderlust fever after seeing the carefree way she saunters around a foreign land. In Saudi Arabia, officials see one thing — a woman refusing to succumb to the demands of men.

Women are required by law, to dress in long robes called Abayas and cover their heads, a starkly different image than the one seen in the video. According to The Independent, in response to her outfit choice, officials called for the region's governor and morality police to take action against the woman.

Although some of the public rushed to defend her, others called for her arrest — and succeeded. The Daily Mail reported that she has been arrested for “dressing indecently.”
