A leading New York City police union is setting its sights on the anti-police rhetoric and violence sweeping the United States in recent years, condemning what it described as “blue racism.”
The Sergeants Benevolent Association released a video over the weekend to address the “strange form of racism” growing around the country.
“The average person doesn’t see those things that make me human,” the video’s narrator said. “They don’t even label me based on being African-American, Latino, Asian, Caucasian, and so on. They tend to see an even broader stereotype through an even more racist lens. When they look at me, they see blue.”
The video was actually in production when six police officers in three different U.S. cities were shot. Two officers were killed in Kissimmee, Florida, while two cops were critically wounded after a shoot-out in Jacksonville. Two state troopers were also wounded after being shot in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.
The SBA represents more than 13,000 officers, making it the fifth-largest police union in the country.
