The vote to legalize recreational use of marijuana is not happening today. The votes are just not there, according to NJ.com.
New Jersey State Senate President Steve Sweeney said in a statement: "While we are all disappointed that we did not secure enough votes to ensure legislative approval of the adult-use cannabis bill today, we made substantial progress on a plan that would make significant changes in social policy. The fight is not over."
Lawmakers said they wouldn't hold the vote if the votes to pass it were not guaranteed. As of Monday afternoon, it seems only 17 or 18 members of the New Jersey senate were prepared to vote yes. 21 yes votes are needed.
Recreational marijuana is legal in 11 states. All but one, Vermont, made it legal by public referendum.
“Putting something like that on the ballot this year would almost guarantee it to fail," Sweeney said. "If it was a presidential year, I wouldn’t hesitate.”
