Astros beat Dodgers to claim first World Series title

The Houston Astros emerged victorious from one of the most exciting Fall Classics in recent memory on Wednesday, defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 in Game 7 to claim the franchise's first-ever World Series championship.

Once again, George Springer starred for Houston. The Astros outfielder went 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs, both of which came on a two-run home run in the second. Springer was named World Series MVP after belting a total of five home runs in the series, tying an MLB record.

Springer's blast also ended another forgettable outing for Yu Darvish, who recorded just 10 outs while allowing nine earned runs in two World Series appearances. The Dodgers' midseason acquisition was pulled during the second inning on Wednesday, having allowed five runs, three earned, in 1.2 innings pitched.

Brandon Morrow, Clayton Kershaw, Kenley Jansen and Rich Hill would combine to pitch 7.1 shutout innings in relief, but the Dodgers offense was only able to muster one run on an Andre Ethier pinch-hit single in the sixth.

Charlie Morton was credited with the win for Houston, giving up just two hits and one run while striking out four over the course of the final four innings.
