Al Franken Officially Resigns From Senate

Al Franken is a former U.S. Senator.  The Minnesota Democrat formally resigned his seat today after confronting numerous allegations of sexual misconduct.  Minnesota Lieutenant Governor Tina Smith will be sworn in as the state's junior senator tomorrow.  Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton selected Democrat Smith to replace Franken.

When he announced his intention to resign last month, Franken insisted that some of the allegations against him were untrue.  He said he remembers some other instances differently.

Franken also took a parting shot at President Trump.  He said it is ironic that he is leaving, "while a man who has bragged on tape about assaulting women is in the Oval Office."

Franken was elected to the Senate in 2008 and was re-elected in 2014
