A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Peru Sunday morning, killing at least 1 person and leaving dozens more injured officials say.
According to officials with the U.S. Geological Survey, the early morning quake was centered just off the coast, about 25 miles from Acari in the Arequipa department of Southwest Peru.
Photos posted to social media show damage to homes and evacuated tourists milling about, waiting to be let back into their hotels. A 55-year-old man was killed after he was crushed by a falling rock. Another 57 people are reportedly injured, with 23 of those in the Chala district - a coastal area popular with tourists and fishermen.
The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially warned there could be hazardous waves generated by the quake that could hit Peru and Chile, but those warnings were cancelled after there was no longer a tsunami threat from the quake.
