Pope Francis Warns World On Brink of Nuclear War

Pope Francis told reporters on Monday that he was afraid of the danger of nuclear war and that one accident could spiral into an uncontrollable situation.

Reuters reports his comments came as he departed for a trip to Chile and Peru. When reporters asked the Pope if he was worried about the possibility of nuclear war, Pope Francis didn't mince words: “I think we are at the very limit. I am really afraid of this. One accident is enough to precipitate things.”

Pope Francis's warnings come a few days after Hawaii issued a false alert to residents about an inbound ballistic missile that created panic, and highlighted dangers of a potential miscalculation.

This isn't the first time Pope Francis has taken a stand on nuclear weapons. At a Vatican conference last November, the Pope publicly condemned the possession of and threat to use nuclear weapons - the two major elements of nuclear deterrence. “The threat of their use, as well as their possession, is to be firmly condemned," he told conference participants.
