Shoppers Riot In France Supermarkets To Get Discounted Nutella

French shoppers attacked each other in an effort to get their hands on Nutella after Intermarché supermarket chains discounted the popular chocolate and hazelnut spread by nearly 70%. The New York Post reports that in some cases police were called to bring the situation under control.

Videos uploaded to social media captured crowds of people all gathering around the pallets, trying to get a hold of jars before they sold out.

One customer described the chaos that unfolded as shoppers rushed to get their hands on the deeply discounted Nutella:

They are like animals. A woman had her hair pulled, an elderly lady took a box on her head, another had a bloody hand. It was horrible.

Customers also assaulted workers as they tried to bring out more jars of Nutella.

We were trying to get in between the customers but they were pushing us.

It got so bad that police had to be called to break up fights between customers.

Not every customer resorted to violence to secure jars for themselves. One worker said that savvy customers came to the stores the night before the sale and hid the jars so they could find them the next day.

Some customers came the night before the promotions to stash the Nutella pots in other places, and thus prevent others from taking them
