Accused Florida School Shooter Makes Court Appearance

19-year-old Nikolas Cruz had a brief court appearance the day after he killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.  He was charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder in the short hearing.

"You’re charged with some very serious crimes," magistrate judge Kim Theresa Mollica said.

He only spoke when asked to confirm his name by the judge. The alleged killer spent most of the hearing with his head down, listening as the judge read the charges against him.

He will be held without bond, and no date has been set for his next court appearance.

According to a police report, he confessed to the crimes after being read his rights. The report states that the 19-year-old former student told police that he decided to discard the rifle and attempt to blend into the crowd to escape the scene.

Police found him about one mile from the school and arrested him without incident.
