A Detroit man was kicked off of a bus after the driver told him his service goat was not allowed to ride the bus with him. Erick Brown said that he takes his goat, named Deer, everywhere and that the animal "makes it easier for me to communicate."
Passengers recorded the confrontation between Brown, the bus driver, and other riders. While Brown was talking to the driver, other passengers became agitated telling him to get off the bus.
"Everybody was complaining because they wanted to get to their home. I was also trying to get home as well," he says.
One woman took her child and walked off the bus after arguing with Brown. Brown eventually relented and got off the bus, walking four miles home with Deer at his side.
Brown said that he had no choice but to take public transportation because his vehicle, which also happens to be a bus, is broken and he cannot afford to get it fixed.
The Detroit Department of Transportation said the driver was correct in removing Brown and his goat from the bus. Nicole Simmons said that the paperwork Brown had from the U.S. Department of Housing identified his goat as a "therapy" or "comfort animal, and not as a service animal. She said that the law only allows for service animals which have been certified by the Federal Transportation Authority to ride public transportation.
