2018 Hurricane Season Predicted To Be More Active Than Usual

The 2018 hurricane season kicks off on June 1st and meteorologists are predicting that it will be slightly more active than average. Forecasters from the Colorado State University Tropical Meteorology Project say they expect 14 named storms to develop, with 7 of them becoming hurricanes, and 3 of them will be major hurricanes. There is a 63 percent chance that a major hurricane will make landfall somewhere in the continental United States.

This is slightly more than the 30-year average, which sees 12 named storms, 6 hurricanes and 2 hurricanes that become Category Three or higher on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

The meteorologists caution that predicting how many storms will develop is tough, and the early forecasts are not always accurate. They plan to release another report on May 31st. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will also release their predictions for the hurricane season in May.

Many areas are still cleaning up from a series of devastating hurricanes in 2017.
