The winner of the $1.5 billion Mega Millions jackpot that was sold last October finally came forward yesterday to claim the prize. The winner will remain anonymous.
The winner had until 5pm on April 19th to claim the prize. It appears she or he took their time to get everything in order. As I understand it, there were also tax advantages to waiting until 2019 to claim the prize.
She or he bought the ticket at the KC Mart in Simpsonville, South Carolina and will take a one-time payment of $877,782,124 before taxes, according to the South Carolina Education Lottery Commission. The winner bought the Quick-Pick ticket on a spur-of-the-moment decision, and even allowed another customer to go first before buying the winning ticket.
