Glass Balcony At Chicago's Willis Tower Cracks As Visitors Stand On It

Tourists visiting the SkyDeck on the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower in Chicago got quite a scare when a protective layer on the glass bottom floor cracked. There are four ledges that allow visitors to step four feet away from the building and experience what it would be like to be suspended 1,353 feet above the ground. From that height, they can get a panoramic view of Chicago along with Lake Michigan and parts of Indiana.

The ledges are made of three layers of half-inch glass and have a protective coating designed to keep the glass from getting scratched as people step on it.

Jesus Pintado shared a video of the broken glass on Facebook and spoke with WBBM-TV about what happened.

"There was a woman with two kids, and they looked really pale and scared because the floor just cracked," Pintado told the news station.

Officials say that nobody was in any danger, but they closed the area so they could replace the protective layer. Even though the ledges were still safe to stand on, Pintado's wife, Karly, decided to head back down the ground floor.

"I'm scared of heights in general so when I saw that happen, I was like nope, not going on," Karly said.
