NJ Skier Dies after Getting Caught in Chairlift at Colorado Resort

Chair lift in winter

A New Jersey man died after getting caught in a chairlift at Vail Mountain's Blue Sky Basin area. According to NorthJersey.com, Jason Varnish, of Short Hills, died of positional asphyxia after he fell through an opening in a chairlift seat and became caught with his coat wrapped around his head and neck.

The chairlift's folding seat was reportedly upright instead of in the down position, according to Eagle County Coroner Kara Bettis.

Vail Resorts said they are "conducting a full investigation" and that the lift has been "thoroughly inspected and is operating normally.”
