New Jersey lawmakers have unveiled an action plan to address the recent surge in drone sightings across the state. On Monday (December 16), Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill called for the federal government to deploy MQ-9 Reaper drones, typically used by Customs and Border Protection, to identify the sources of these drones. She emphasized the need for better communication and coordination among federal and local authorities to ensure public safety.
Congressman Josh Gottheimer echoed Sherrill's concerns, advocating for the establishment of drone traffic control and radar systems. He also proposed creating an online platform for residents to report drone sightings. Gottheimer criticized the federal response as "insulting" and called for a public briefing from agencies like the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security.
Both Sherrill and Gottheimer, who are contenders for the Democratic nomination for governor in 2025, have been vocal about the need for a unified response to the drone issue. They suggest that the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) could lead an interagency response.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas stated that there is no evidence of foreign involvement in the drone sightings. He supports giving local authorities the legal ability to intercept drones.
The lawmakers' plan includes deploying Reaper drones and counter-UAS radars, centralizing the response, and improving public communication. They also call for a report to Congress on future detection and prevention measures. Gottheimer has introduced the RADAR Act, which aims to expand federal grants for local law enforcement to access radar systems.
