NJ Transit is offering a 50% discount on roundtrip travel for commuters affected by ongoing repairs on Interstate 80. Starting Monday (March 24), travelers from Hackettstown, Mount Olive, Netcong, Lake Hopatcong, and Mount Arlington can board trains to New York, Newark, and Hoboken without purchasing a fare. Passengers transferring at Newark Broad Street Station or Summit Station should inform the train crew to receive a transfer ticket for their connecting train.
The return journey requires only a one-way ticket back to the original station, effectively providing a full 50% discount on roundtrip travel. This initiative aims to ease congestion and provide alternative travel options during the emergency repair work on I-80.
Governor Phil Murphy emphasized the importance of these discounts in reducing road traffic and offering residents a reliable way to commute. The ongoing repairs are due to a series of sinkholes, including a new one that recently appeared in Wharton, causing significant traffic detours. The New Jersey Department of Transportation is working around the clock to address these issues, with federal support expected following a state of emergency declaration in Morris County.
The fare reduction will remain in effect until the repairs are completed, offering relief to commuters facing detours and traffic delays. For more information on schedules and updates, commuters can visit the NJ Transit website or use their mobile app.
