Newton will begin its spring fire hydrant flushing program from Friday, April 25, to Tuesday, April 29, 2025. The flushing will help prevent iron buildup in the water lines. According to the Town of Newton, hydrants in Sparta and Andover will be flushed on Friday (April 25) between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Newton hydrants will be flushed on Sunday (April 27) and Tuesday (April 29) from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Residents may experience low water pressure and water discoloration during the flushing period. The discoloration, caused by dislodged materials in the water mains, is not harmful but can stain fabrics. Officials advise residents to avoid doing laundry during this time to prevent permanent stains. The schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions or emergency utility work.
