A newly released video shows the dramatic moment when a massive sinkhole opened on Interstate 80 in Wharton just after Christmas. Captured by police body cameras, the footage reveals the immediate aftermath of the sinkhole's formation, which has kept parts of the highway closed for months. The sinkhole was linked to the collapse of an abandoned mineshaft beneath the road, a nod to the area's mining history.

The incident occurred on December 26, 2024, and led to significant traffic disruptions, affecting local businesses and causing congestion on detour routes in Morris County. According to ABC News, the video shows two drivers in shock as they stood near the sinkhole, with steam rising from the cavity.

Repair efforts have been underway since the incident, with crews pouring concrete, sealing the area, and adding stone in preparation for paving. The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) expects to reopen two eastbound lanes by May 21, with two westbound lanes following a week later. The entire highway is slated to be fully operational by June 25.

The sinkhole's impact extended beyond road closures. Commuters were advised to use New Jersey Transit trains as an alternative, but a strike by engineers has suspended rail service, complicating travel further. Local business owners have expressed frustration over the prolonged closures and their economic impact.

As the reopening date approaches, NJDOT remains focused on completing repairs and ensuring the highway's safety for commuters. The video serves as a stark reminder of the unexpected challenges that can arise on heavily trafficked routes like I-80.
