Construction has begun on the new Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown, Manhattan. New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy attended the groundbreaking ceremony today (May 29). The new terminal will replace the existing 75-year-old structure and cover over two million square feet.

The project, which received final approval earlier this year, has a budget of $10 billion. It aims to address the projected commuter growth between 2040 and 2050. The terminal will feature new entrances, retail spaces, an indoor atrium, and public areas. Additionally, it will have ramps directly connecting to the Lincoln Tunnel, allowing nearly double the number of buses per hour.

The new terminal is designed to enhance the surrounding community by providing a best-in-class customer experience and meeting the region's 21st-century public transportation needs. It will also include restaurants, entertainment, and three and a half acres of open green space.

According to ABC7NY, the construction will occur in phases, with a temporary terminal and new ramps expected by 2028. The main terminal is scheduled for completion in 2032.
