What a wonderful Saturday afternoon I had rafting on the Delaware River with the beautiful Kathleen. I will never forget it.
We checked in to Kitatinny Canoes in Matamoras at 1pm, signed simple waiver forms, then hopped on the bus for the six mile drive north. Liz from Kitatinny Canoes is an NNJ listener who gave us the safety speech, and then young Matt, who also listens to NNJ, launched us into the Delaware River in an inflatable raft. Very nice.
With Pennsylvania on our right and New York on our left, Kathleen and I navigated down the state line in the middle of the river for a peaceful six miles, which took just a bit over three hours. The water is very calm for the most part and only got real choppy in three or four stretches. For most of the trip, there are no buildings on either side of the river, just fellow boaters, and you think for a moment that this is a rare sight that hasn't changed for hundreds, perhaps thousands, of years.
Rafting on the river was something I've always wanted to do. and I'm so glad I did it, especially with the beautiful Kathleen. If you've ever thought about it, go ahead and rent a kayak, or a canoe, or a raft from one of the several rental companies on the Delaware. Pack a cooler with drinks and sandwiches and make an afternoon out of it. It will bring you closer to nature and closer to the person you're enjoying the trip with. It certainly did both for me on Saturday afternoon.
