The 2023 Golden Globe Winners aired last night ( 1/10/2023) #1 The show was supposed to be two hours but went on for more than three hours. How did they miscalculate by that much?

Steven Spielberg had a big night. The legendary filmmaker won a best director award for The Fabelmans, an autobiographical movie about his start in the movie business. The film was also named Best Picture, Drama.

But it was The Banshees of Inisherin with the most trophies — Best Picture, Musical or Comedy, Best Screenplay, Motion Picture and Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy for Colin Farrell.

On the TV side, House of the Dragon won best drama and Abbott Elementary took home best comedy. The White Lotus was named best limited or anthology series.

Everything Everywhere All at Once star Ke Huy Quan, best known for playing Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, secure his comeback with the award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture.

Other acting honors went to Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Austin Butler (Elvis), Cate Blanchett (Tár), Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Kevin Costner (Yellowstone), Zendaya (Euphoria), Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary), Evan Peters (Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story) and Jennifer Coolidge (The White Lotus).

The 80th annual Golden Globe Awards aired on NBC Tuesday for the first time since 2021. Last year's ceremony was dropped from the network following a report that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association had no Black members. Host Jerrod Carmichael pulled no punches during Tuesday's broadcast, roasting the HFPA in his mostly serious opening monologue.

“I’ll tell you why I’m here,” Carmichael said. “I’m here because I’m Black.”

He added, “I won’t say they [are] a racist organization, but they didn’t have a single Black member until George Floyd died, so do with that information what you will.”

There was one joke that Carmichael made during the show which created perhaps the most awkward moment of the night. Coming out of a commercial break, Carmichael appeared on stage holding three Golden Globe statues and joked they were the awards that Tom Cruise gave back in protest. He then pitched an idea saying, "I think maybe we take these three things and exchange them for the safe return of Shelly Miscavige," referring to the wife of Scientology leader David Miscavige, who hasn't been seen publicly since 2007. There were a few nervous laughs and some groans from the stunned crowd.

Eddie Murphy, who received a lifetime achievement award, delivered a lighter moment when he told the audience that he followed a simple blueprint for success in the movie business. “Pay your taxes, mind your business and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out your [bleeping] mouth.”
